In a recent study it is found that 4% of Ahmedabad population (as per 2010 estimate) is carrying Thalassemia trait and it’s on the rise. There are 1000 children who are on constant blood supply to stay alive. Incidence of Thalassemia Minor in Gujarat (caste wise Distribution) is as under.
Hence it is very critical to take immediate steps to eradicate thalassemia from the city. Prathama has been actively involved in thalassemia eradication program through awareness, screening and counseling. If we can prevent a Thalassemia Major child born out of wedlock by pre-screening, we can eradicate the problem. Screening forms the most important element in Thalassemia eradication.
Actions required to achieve this objective:
Level 1 Screening Youth for Thalassemia Minor trait.
Level 2 Testing married couple
Level 3 Testing pregnant women.
Prathama periodically conducts various awareness camps, screening camps to check persons with Thalassemia Minor trait. It has developed 3 facilities for Thalassemia screening as under.

Prathama has conducted various camps in schools, colleges and corporate house. Matrimonial agencies are also contacted to recommend this test to the couple before wed lock. By this the agency will not only educate the young generation but will make them cautious about the next safe step to prevent Thalassemia. A recommendation to the gynecologist is introduced where Thalassemia test along with the pre gynaec test package, will contribute to controlling the problem.
Join us to Eradicate Thalassemia from Society
You can join the Thalassemia Eradication Campaign by organizing Screening Camp at your premise. Our team will visit your premise and educate about the screening procedure. Once enrolment is through, the screening camp can be organized on suitable date. Every person screened for Thalassemia will get a Certificate on his/her status.
Alternatively if you are single or family, you can either visit Prathama Blood Centre in Ahmedabad or check out at any of our Blood Mobile Vans for Thalassemia Screening at your nearest location. You can call Prathama to check nearest Blood Mobile session to your office or home.
