Prathama Blood Centre issues 300 blood components every day. On an average, every 5 minutes we issue one component to a needy patient. But there is still 50% gap in demand and supply for safe blood. With advancement in medical and surgical procedures the need for blood is increasing multifold and so far there is no substitute for blood. Less than 1% of Indian population donates blood voluntarily where the demand is about 5% as of now. This may increase further.
For example, in Germany about 20% of its population donates blood voluntarily. Fortunately some cities in India like Ahmedabad in Gujarat, Kota in Rajasthan coming forward in big number to meet the gap in demand and supply. However many cities in India still need to gear up to fill the gap.Prathama urges every healthy person to come forward voluntarily to donate blood and help India to become self-sufficient in blood supply. We should shred the idea of replacement donation and donating only for near and dear when needed. We should donate regularly to keep society out of blood crisis. So please come forward and be a regular blood donor.
