Continuing Medical Education (CME)

Prathama Blood Centre had organized a CME on “Blood component Therapy in Management of Vector-borne diseases and Oncology patients” on 10th October 2015. The CME was attended by various clinicians, blood bankers and health care providers from all over the city. On this occasion Dr. Navneet Shah (M.D. Physician Specialist in Endocrinology), Dr.Surabhi Madan(M.D. Physician Infectious disease Specialist), Dr. Deepa Trivedi (Paediatric Haemato-Oncologist- Vedanta Hospital) & Dr. Sanjay Gupta (Transfusion Medicine Consultant-Apollo Hospital) were invited as speakers.

The purpose of the CME was to highlight the importance and usage of blood components particularly platelets in vector-borne diseases specifically Dengue and the role blood bank has to play in collecting, processing and timely issue of this life saving blood products. The CME also meant to serve as a platform to discuss these topics amongst various specialists and blood bankers for providing better health care to patients. Another category of patients who need blood components the most and for long terms are the patients of Haemato-Oncological disorders.

As we all know Dengue has caused an epidemic in past few months in various cities all over the country creating havoc amongst common people and wide shortage of blood components at various centres. Dengue is known to cause low platelets due to immune mediated destruction leading to increased risk of bleeding. These patients then need to be supplemented by platelet transfusions.

Prathama Blood Centre has played a very vital role by carefully maintaining the stock of random donor and single donor platelets and is making available round the clock to the needy patients on “No Replacement” basis. In addition to this Prathama also provides platelets to cancer patients at GCRI free of cost on a regular basis. Prathama also provides blood components free of processing charges to patients of Thalassemia, Haemophilia, Sickle cell anemia, Aplastic anemia and patients admitted to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) run hospitals. In addition to the above Prathama also provides products free of processing charges to BPL card holders. All these steps are in good faith of the society at large and in the optimum utilization of critical blood components.

This highlights importance of blood bank in the system of health care of provision and how a complete and reliable system of health care can be built by joining hands of various departments and by the support of the system and people. CME was attended by Doctors, medical students and regular Voluntary blood donors of Prathama.
